We are pleased to announce that the inaugural Asia Oceania Kendo Championships (1AOKC) will be held at the Tokyo Budokan in May 2026.

We are pleased to announce that the inaugural Asia Oceania Kendo Championships (1AOKC) will be held at the Tokyo Budokan in May 2026.

Regarding the international kendo tournaments, the World Kendo Championships (WKC) are held every three years, the European Kendo Championships (EKC) have been held 33 times as of 2025, and the Latin American Kendo Championships (CLAK), bringing together countries from Central and South America, have also been held nine times. However, an international tournament for the Asian region, including Japan, the origin country of kendo, had not been held until now.

With the agreement of countries and regions in the Asia Zone, including Japan and Korea, it has been decided to organize the Asia Oceania Kendo Championships, and Tokyo has been selected as the host city for the commemorative first championships.

This tournament is expected to feature participation from over 20 countries and regions, including both FIK members and non-FIK members.

This will be Japan's first time hosting an international tournament since the 16th World Kendo Championships (16WKC) held in May 2015.
The 20th World Kendo Championships (20WKC), scheduled for May 2027 in Tokyo, will mark the second consecutive year Japan hosts an international tournament.

Regulation of the Matches

Regulation of the Matches

All matches will be conducted in accordance with the FIK’s Regulations of Kendo Shiai and
Shinpan (July 26, 2023, hereafter “Regulation of the Matches”). Any amendments determined and
adopted by the 1AOKC Preparatory Committee (to be established) shall take effect following the
approval of this Program and its Regulations.

Qualifications

Qualifications

(1) Participating Organizations
National Kendo organizations intending to join the Asia Oceania Kendo Federation are
eligible to participate in this tournament. Countries/regions in the Asia Oceania region that
are members of other Confederations may participate with the permission of their respective
Confederation.
(2) Competitors
Competitors participating in the 1AOKC must satisfy the following requirements:
a. Must be officially registered members of the participating organization.
b. Must hold the nationality of the country or region they represent at the time of Final Entry
(a passport may be requested for verification).
If a competitor does not hold the nationality of the country or region they wish to represent,
the president of the organization concerned must submit an official written request, with
explanation, to the 1AOKC Chairman. Participation will be permitted only after approval
by the 1AOKC Chairman prior to Final Entry.
c. Competitors must have been born on or before 29 May 2010.

Drawings

After the Final Entry has been confirmed, the draws for all competition categories shall be conducted in the presence of officials from the host organization and other appropriate observers.
The results of the draws shall be promptly communicated to all participating organizations. No re-draws or alterations to match pairings shall be permitted after the draw, even in the event of a withdrawal or a no-show.

Commendation

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd (2 people) placed competitors and 4 “Fighting Spirit Awards” shall be awarded for each category. The Fighting Spirit Award winner will be selected by the Presiding Referee (Shinpan- shunin ) at each shiaijo .

Others

(1) Upon arrival at the host city, all national delegations, referees, and tournament officials must report their arrival to the Tournament Secretariat and receive the necessary materials from the organizing body.
(2) Any competitor who fails to appear within five minutes after being called immediately prior to a match shall be disqualified and will forfeit the match.
(3) When engaging in Kendo wearing men, participants must wear either a shield or a face mask covering the mouth area to prevent the spread of droplets.
(4) This tournament may include doping control in accordance with the regulations of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In addition to an anti-doping seminar held during the tournament period, participants may be required to complete an online anti-doping course as a condition of participation.
(5) All national delegations, referees, and tournament officials must obtain appropriate medical and accident insurance in their own country covering the full duration of travel and participation.
(6) Participation in the joint keiko (practice session) shall be open to tournament participants who wish to take part.
